Uptown Saturday Night

This album cover for Camp Lo’s 1997 debut record “Uptown Saturday Night” features a dynamic illustration that is a visual homage to Ernie Barnes’ 1971 painting “The Sugar Shack”. Unlike other album covers like Marvin Gaye’s 1976 album “I Want You” or “Donald Byrd and 125th Street, N.Y.C.” in 1979,  the album’s artwork was not made by the artist Barnes himself but rather by NYC graffiti artist Dr. Revolt. This rendition captures the vibrant energy and styles of jazz, funk, and soul that reflect the duo’s musical influences and the culture of that era. The design of this record plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for the music with themes of nostalgia and celebration of hip-hop.
