The new wave movement was a less political evolution of the punk rock genre and took place mainly from the late 1970s into the early 1980s. It was a quirkier and melodic addition to its predecessor that took inspiration from the aesthetics and pop music of the 50’s and 60’s. Design wise, new wave can be identified by its grid-defying juxtaposing elements such as multiple type weights, bold and provocative color/imagery, and inconsistent spacing.
Parallel Lines is Blondie’s third studio album, and arguably their most memorable with several successful songs. It is also memorable due to the art on the album cover. Photographed by Edo Bertoglio, the lead singer Debbie Harry stands out in white in contrast to other band members blending into the background. The red text on the top and center “parallel lines/Blondie” is instantly eye-catching as it is the only part of the image that is not black and white.
