World’s Deadliest Animals infographic, Bill Gates 2014
World’s Deadliest Animals infographic was highly recognized when published on Gates Notes by Bill Gates on Apr 25, 2014. I could not find a reliable source stating the designer of the infographic itself. However, the design served Gate's purpose of spreading awareness on Malaria, spread by mosquitoes. Gates wanted to emphasize the danger of mosquito-borne diseases.
The infographic effectively communicates the message through simple icons representing each animal and bar graphs indicating the number of deaths caused per year. The bars allow viewers to clearly understand the great differences in threat levels. The limited color palette consisting of blue, white, red, and gray create a simple, focused design that emphasizes the information without distracting the viewer.
The infographic also employs a clear hierarchy, organizing the data from the least to the greatest number of deaths, guiding the viewer's eye from the top to the bottom of the design. At the bottom of the infographic, the largest bars, representing humans and mosquitoes, draw attention and highlight the true threats. This choice emphasizes the data while also highlighting humans’ global impact and the issue of mosquito-borne diseases.
