This poster was designed by Yokoo Tadanori 橫尾忠則 for an essay by Japanese author Yukio Mishima 三島由紀夫, titled The Aesthetics of the End 終わりの美学. In Yokoo’s unique design style, the poster mixes traditional Japanese images with American pop culture. It includes themes like death and sexuality.
In the top left corner of the poster is a photo of the author, Yukio Mishima. The image in the top right shows a scene from Mishima’s 1956 novel The Temple of the Golden Pavilion (金閣寺, Kinkaku-ji). The ocean waves on the poster remind people of traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The rising sun pattern in the background symbolizes Japanese cultural history, but it also comes from Japan’s imperialist past in the 20th century.
