This is the redesigned packaging of Garigari-kun, a popular Japanese ice candy brand produced by Akagi Nyugyo. The current character design and packaging style were renewed in 2000 by Takahashi Shunsuke, a designer responsible for the brand’s visual identity. He not only redesigned the iconic character but also led the shift to a more energetic and impactful look that reflects both the spirit of the product and the trends of the time.

The character illustration was given a 3D effect, which was becoming fashionable in the early 2000s, and the design as a whole was created to symbolize energy and excitement. According to Takahashi, despite the rapid pace of developing new product versions, he always incorporates a strong sense of liveliness and movement into each package design.

Visually, the new packaging emphasizes bold colors for each flavor (e.g., blue for soda, red for cola, green for grapefruit) and features dynamic poses of the Garigari-kun character in action — eating ice, jumping, or showing exaggerated expressions. These changes not only attract attention on store shelves but also appeal to a wide range of age groups, from children to nostalgic adults.

The typography is thick, cartoonish, and consistent across flavors, enhancing brand recognition. The actual product image is secondary to the character, signaling a deliberate focus on character-based branding.

As a whole, the Garigari-kun package redesign demonstrates how contemporary Japanese graphic design blends pop culture, humor, and commercial strategy, creating packaging that is both visually fun and culturally iconic.
