100 Posters of Tadanori Yokoo – Exhibition Poster (1972)
Title (cover headline): 100 Posters of TADANORI YOKOO
Published: 1972
Designer: Tadanori Yokoo (横尾忠則)
Category: Exhibition poster / Japanese graphic design
Description:
Produced to underwrite his own retrospective, this poster illustrates Tadanori Yokoo's graphic collage method. A surreal central figure with a fish slicing across her face is ringed by rising rays of the sun, inset photos, and pop art iconography. It both advertises and illustrates Yokoo's difficult, layered visual aesthetic. This poster was published with a book called “100 POSTERS OF TADANORI YOKOO”.
Design Notes:
Utilizes photomontage, flat color, and symbolism
Blends Japanese visual traditions with psychedelic Western aesthetics
Marries tradition and modernity with irony and intensity
Designer Bio:
Tadanori Yokoo (b. 1936) revolutionized Japanese graphic design with his anti-modernist, maximalist visual approach. This poster helped project him worldwide.
