The Black Panther Logo has a convoluted history. It originated from the Lowndes County Freedom Organization [LCFO], a black political party in Alabama, before being adopted by the more widely acclaimed Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, California. The LCFO wanted to empower black voters while navigating the implicated threat of white violence. The logo was designed by Ruth Howard and Dorothy Zellner, but they didn’t work on the piece as a collaborative effort. The symbol represented resilience and revolution. When the emblem was adopted by the
notarized Oakland Party it became an international symbol of black political power; rebellion and resistance then in 1966 when it was first designed.
