 Sista Grrrls Flyer

6

Building the foundation for contemporary Afro-punk in the late 1990s was Sista Grrls, an all black female punk band created by Tamar Kali-Brown, Simi Stone, Honeychild Coleman, and Maya Sokora. Challenging the lack of diverse representation of Black women, Sista Grrrls was for and by Black women, creating a space for Black punks to express themselves freely and openly.  This flyer reflects the bold bubblegum-pop aesthetic of the 1990s, contrasting with the grunge-inspired, sharp typefaces. The red lipstick heart evokes the DIY nature of riot grrrl zines, reinforcing the rebellious and self-made spirit of the movement. Through the dynamic visual design, Honeychild Coleman challenged preconceived notions about punk fliers and zines, offering critical visuals that appropriately represent Sista Grrrls.
