Riot Grrrl No. 1 Fanzine Cover
This print is a cover of one of the original Riot Grrrl zines, created by Bratmobile’s Molly Neuman and Allison Wolfe. It was their second zine publication following Germ Girls. The Riot Grrrl zine was made using simple materials such as paper, a typewriter, a photocopier, a Sharpie, and old magazines. Through layering, collage, cut-and-paste, handwriting, and drawing, the zine embodied a raw, tactile, and handmade aesthetic. This DIY approach not only enhanced its personal and expressive nature but also aligned with the movement’s anti-establishment ethos. The cover art is visually striking, featuring a woman in a powerful stance, punching the air. This composition leads the eye directly to the bold title, Riot Grrrl, written in a bold cursive typeface. This contrasts sharply with the traditional serif typewriter typeface and handwritten elements, creating an intentional typographic hierarchy. The combination of textures, expressive imagery, varied typefaces, and a stark black-and-white palette successfully conveys the zine’s purpose of an unapologetic expression of girl angst, rebellion, and feminist activism.
