CHOP SUEY SPEX (Slant zine)

Within Mimi Thi Nguyen’s Slant zine is a section about the author's personal racist encounter with the “Chop Suey Spex” toy. This toy was created by X’s band member Extene Cervenka as a “joke,” saying they are meant to be in bad taste. However, the paper glasses that make fun of Asian eye shapes are racist and were removed from stores when consumers complained. This poster displays a white woman pulling back her eyes which is the mimicking the Asian eye shape, following the phrase “Do you think I need these?”. Furthering on an ad for the glasses that creates commentary on the stereotypes Asian people face. The ridiculous, shocking language reflects the insane existence of such a product in the first place. The extreme language highlights the reality of the rigid molds imposed on Asian Americans, forcing a reflection on the persistence of these harmful narratives.
