Designer’s Name + Biography:
Shichiro Imatake (1905–2000) was a Japanese graphic designer. He was born in Kobe and worked for many years in Kansai. Imatake designed many famous packages and posters in Japan, such as the “Oband” rubber band box and Mentholatum products.

Cultural/Artistic Context:
In the 1930s, Japanese design was influenced by modern styles from Europe, but also developed its own character. This poster for hair pomade shows a simple but elegant drawing of a woman. The soft lines and modern lettering made the product look fashionable.
