This work was created for the cover design of the Swiss graphic magazine GRAPHIS by 横尾忠則 Yokoo Tadanori in 1974 . It depicts Johnny Weissmüller, who played the title role in the movie “Tarzan,” which Yokoo saw for the first time as a child.
Yokoo was born in 1936 in Hyogo prefecture, Japan. After working as a graphic designer at the Kobe Shimbun newspaper, he became independent. He met Yukio Mishima and was inspired by Mishima's “sacred and profane as one” dogma. Following Mishima's death in 1970, he spent the next fifteen years leaning into a spiritual world of occultism and mysticism. However, realizing these were profound illusions, he found painting as an extension of his quest for “self.” He has created many famous works, such as bold pop art train wrappings and his own museum in Kobe.
