Exposition of Japan

10

This graphic work was designed for the “Exposition of Japan,” a national event that showcased the country's industrial progress and modern identity. The piece was used as the back cover illustration for the Guide to the Shining Great Exposition of Japan.  Obata is known for his bold and experimental style.

The design brings together several symbols: an airplane, a tower, gears, and a ship, all arranged into a bold, geometric layout. The ship appears to float on the sea, while the overall composition and the red color in the background evoke the image of a setting sun meeting the horizon. This imagery and the Japanese flag design at the center show its nationalist/patriotic identity in this work. The square-shaped design of the lettering is also unique and modern.
