In celebration of opening Toky’s first subway segment (from Asakusa to Ueno), Sugiura Hisui (1876-1965) designed this poster to commemorate the milestone of urban modernization at the time. Sugiura has studied Western art and design in Europe and came back to Japan to advance the poster art in Japan.
