A kind man saves an injured crane. Later, a mysterious woman visits him and weaves beautiful cloth to repay his kindness, asking him never to look at her while she works. When he breaks his promise and peeks, he discovers she is the crane he once saved, and she flies away forever.
First published in 1966, this picture book remains one of the representative works of Japanese picture-book art today, combining Matsutani’s gentle storytelling with Iwasaki’s poetic watercolor illustrations.
