The poster is a notable example of the "Pacific Wave" movement, a postmodern graphic design style that emerged in the San Francisco Bay Area during the early 1980s. 

About the Designer

Michael Patrick Cronan (1951–2013) was a highly influential brand strategist and designer. Beyond this 1980s identity work, he is most famously known for: 

 

  • Naming Iconic Brands: He and his partner Karin Hibma coined the names TiVo and Kindle.
  • Logo Design: He designed the "smiling TV" logo for TiVo.
  • Diverse Clients: His firm, Cronan, worked with major organizations including Apple, Levi Strauss & Co., and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).
  • Product Design: He co-founded the clothing line Walking Man, which received international design awards.
