Women’s Attire in Sports

5

This print shows how women in sports have been represented through graphic design across different time periods, revealing attitudes toward gender, athleticism, and equal representation. It shows how design both reflects and influences social values, revealing overlooked histories of female athletes and how their visibility in media and public imagery has shifted over time.

This lithographic print depicts a woman by the name of Sarah Jane Wallager during the 19th century.  The 'bloomers' that she has on  is intentionally longer than they would have been in the 1850's . This allows room for more athletic activities and movements for women that were just being allowed to participate in such activities.
