Topps NFL football cards box

Packaging for the Topps brand 1999 NFL cards. There was a total of 357 cards in this series, including a subset of highlights and draft picks.  The set produced notable player cards including Emmitt Smith, Dan Marino, John Elway, Barry Sanders, Troy Aikman, Brett Favre, Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Peyton Manning, Ricky Williams, and Edgerrin James.

Topps was a popular brand for NFL cards from 1956-2016. Today, the Topps brand focuses on MLB cards. The cards themselves usually included yearly/ season stats, a small bio portion, and a photo. These could be purchased at card shops, convenience stores, and average stores like Walmart and Target.

The brand used typefaces similar to Franklin Gothic and Alternate Gothic for many years. The sans-serif type on the 1999 box is very similar to Alternate Gothic. The series release falls under the era of Butch Jacobs, who was the director of photography for the company from 1973-2007. Jacobs had the job of identifying players and choosing the best photo to place on the cards.
