Maskenselbstporträts
Maskenselbstporträts, or “masked-self-portraits”, is a series of 43 photographs taken by Gertrud Arndt which depict her as the subject, donning various textiles and expressions. Arndt, like many female artists who attended Bauhaus, was funneled into the weaving/textiles discipline, as it was deemed the more feminine practice. In Maskenselbstporträts, Arndt uses these textiles as an element of costume, referencing the facade women take on as an extension of their sex; her work calls attention to the illusion of society's fabricated idea, ‘femininity’.
