Feng Zikai chose this historical allusion as the theme of the painting, and used the techniques of “close-up” and “exaggeration”. The image shows only the arrow at the top of the pagoda, giving a powerful visual impact. The cover of the magazine “China Youth” deliberately used this painting, and the intention is very clear. This painting means that every revolutionary youth, in order to liberate the oppressed nation, shoots an arrow of “determination” into the “red May Tower”. Why is it the red May? Because it commemorates the “May Thirtieth Movement” and the martyrs who shed their blood and sacrificed their lives in the “May Thirtieth Movement”.
The May Thirtieth Movement (simplified Chinese: 五卅运动; traditional Chinese: 五卅運動; pinyin: Wǔsà Yùndòng) was a major labor and anti-imperialist movement during the middle-period of the Republic of China era. It began when the Shanghai Municipal Police opened fire on Chinese protesters in Shanghai's International Settlement on 30 May 1925 (the Shanghai massacre of 1925). The shootings sparked international censure and nationwide anti-foreign demonstrations and riots[1] such as the Hands Off China protests in the United Kingdom.
