Otl Aicher’s Munich 1972 Olympic pictograms are a landmark in design history, setting a new standard for universal visual communication. As shown in the sketch, Aicher utilizes a strict grid, geometric forms, and consistent visual language to create clear, easily recognizable symbols for various sports and facilities. Because of the diversity of languages and cultures, the pictograms had to prioritize functionality to ensure accessibility for everyone.

Aicher’s work would influence modern wayfinding systems, from public signage in airports and transportation hubs to branding and interface design.
