March On Raleigh Political Poster

2

In 1971, The Wilmington 10 was a group of civil rights activists who were falsely convicted and incarcerated after a riot occurred because of MLK's assassination. In 1972, The Charlotte 3 was a group of black men who were falsely accused of setting a barn on fire and were sentenced to 25 years.

Rupert Garcia made this poster for a march, asking the NC governor to reduce the sentencing charges for the 10 and 3. The image is of Reverend Ben Chavis Jr., the leader of the Wilmington 10 activist group. Chavis received the longest sentence of 34 years in prison. Garcia's style is graphic screen printing, using blocked-out colors with high contrast. The flatness of the work draws the viewer into the eyes in particular.

In 1980, all convictions were overturned for the Wilmington 10.  In 1979, Governor Jim Hunt commuted the sentences of all three of the Charlotte 3.

I found this in the Center for the Study of Political Graphics website.
