Female By Birth
Formed in 1985, the Guerrilla Girls are a collective of female artists that began when they protested an exhibition titled An International Survey of Painting and Sculpture. They gathered to fight for the equal rights of artists that are women or of color by adopting a “guerrilla” tactic of communication in their posters. Over time they systemically put any man in the art world on edge by providing factual statistics in their posters while calling them out, ranging from curators to critics. They remain anonymous by adopting pseudonyms and wearing distinct gorilla masks as they perform.
Guerrilla Girls on Tour! is their activist touring company which began in 2001. The Guerrilla Girls put on lectures, plays, and performances with a mix of comedic techniques in order to create the ultimate form of feminist theatre. They aim to transform viewers into activists and artists using their powerful work, and educate by leading workshops and masterclasses. This piece was likely made by grabbing multiple images of women and collaging them into an evolutionary composition.
