Wise Guys (1991) is the 17th issue of the Emigre Magazine series edited by Rudy Vanderlans, with typography by Zuzana Licko. This issue focused on the groundbreaking work of Piet Schreuders and Edward Fella. Featuring conversations with the designers and transcripts from “Lay In, Lay Out,” “Mystery and Necessity in Typography” by Vanderlans, and “Spider’s Strategem: The Deconstructive Web of Edward Fella,” which narrated contrasting typography as a tool for abstraction and clarity. The designs used in this issue reflected the chaos and essence of the two designers’ philosophies by using Fella’s designs, deconstructivist irregular layouts, and Licko’s fragmented typographic designs cohesive to the content of the book.
