This book features two characters wearing blue and red clothes. Using two colors makes it easy to distinguish between them. Guri and Gura are mice. The first illustration shows them walking backward, a movement that Omura struggled to depict. She also illustrated the scene where they make a large castella, which is the main focus of the story. Depicting food in the scene makes the book more fun and engaging for children.
The combination of their names and the use of just two colors, red and blue, creates a simple yet captivating design that attracts children to the story. Although mice are small animals, the scene of them making a giant castella makes strong and memorable impression on young readers.
