The Swank Social Club was a club of African-American men in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1934, the club started as an informal gathering of boys along Sixth Street in Charlotte’s Second Ward. During their youth, they played sports such as football and baseball in some of the vacant lots around the area. As they entered their teenage years, one of these boys, John M. Spears, suggested that they create a group with a name, motto, colors, and flower to represent themselves formally.
