This Free cola advertisement is from Chile with clear inspiration from American Culture. The red text with a white outline in a cursive style is a clear reference to Coca-Cola. The general appearance of the soda itself also has parallels to the popular American drink. This advertisement is part of a "Free Concert" campaign. The image in the background is of an electric guitar and some fire emulating the rock and counterculture look. The slogan "Free trae para ti todo el sabor de rock" translates to "Free brings you all the flavor of rock".
This advertisement is inspired by American culture but also in response to the politics in Chile at the time. General Augusto Pinochet, ran Chile under an authoritarian military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. Posters and murals were censored which led designers to take inspiration from branding, advertisements, fliers, and other media used to sell products. Using American iconography from U.S. products was a way of working within the constraints of censorship. Once this ban on posters and murals was lifted in 1988 designers and artists visibly showcased their disapproval of the military regime.
