Paula Scher: MAPS
MAPS by Paula Scher is a series of large-scale, hand-painted typographic maps that blend fine arts, information, and graphic design. Beginning as a personal project in the 1990s and published as a book in 2011, these works reimagine cartography through excessive typography and vibrant color schemes that exaggerate, distort, and layer information. Rather than aim for accuracy, her maps present skewed versions of reality that comment on information overload and the constant stream of deceptively authoritative news. Scher's MAPS challenges the notion of graphic design as being purely functional, demonstrating its potential as a medium for personal expression and artistic exploration.
