Poster for IV Bienial of São Paulo

811

Designed by Brazilian artist Alexandre Wollner, this poster advertised the fourth São Paulo Art Biennal, a contemporary art exhibit that occurs every two years.  This specific exhibition took place in the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo from September 22nd to December 30th, 1957.

The poster includes information on the location and dates of the event while keeping a modernist style of the time period. This specific style is referred to as concrete art, reflective of the rapid industrialization taking place in Brazil during the 1950s.  The concrete art movement reflects similar minimalist and modernist values to the Swiss style design.

The first São Paulo Art Biennal featured works by Swiss artist Max Bill, contributing to the development of concrete art which was ultimately influenced by Bauhaus ideas. Max Bill served as an inspiration to Alexandre Wollner, influencing him to explore concretism and technological facilitation within his design process.
