Ninth Issue of Artes Visuales

‘Artes Visuales’ was a publication which elevated avant garde, non traditional art/ art theory beyond established art spaces in Latin America. In this particular issue, cofounder Carla Stellweg took on the question of  what it meant to be a female Mexican artist at the Museo de Arte Moderno, combining viewpoints from multiple artists and writers for its content. At the time of production feminism was not a prominent ideology, and the progressive perspective was that gender was irrelevant in relation to art; Stellweg believed that the conversation of women and artistic expression was more nuanced. In creating this issue, Stellweg spread awareness to the idea that the culture of female creators was worth examining within its broader grouping of Latin American artists.
