Jonathan Shapiro, widely known as Zapiro, is a South African designer and cartoonist born in Cape Town in 1958. He designed this poster in 1983 during South Africa's anti-apartheid movement. According to the Museum of Modern Art's description of this work, this poster was part of a campaign that protested against  “the forced relocation of black residents near Cape Town to Khayelitsha, a government-controlled township away from the city”.

The text at the top of the poster is Xhosa for ‘We are not going to Khayelitsha’, followed by ‘We demand houses, security and comfort’ in English. To the left, a man and woman raise their fists in protest as a child looks up at them; illustrating that this movement is not for one demographic, but for the South African black community as a whole.
