June Tarpe Mills’, known in publishing as “Tarpe Mills” is the creator of the Miss Fury comics first produced in 1941. This comic narrative was a major breakthrough for women within the comic industry but also for female action heroes found in said comics. Mill's choose to publish under the gender-neutral name "Tarpe Mills" to avoid backlash from a heavily male-dominated industry at the time.

Miss Fury, originally introduced as The Black Fury was known to be a wealthy socialite, who at night was a vigilante who used an African ceremonial panther skin as her disguise. Mills’ success came not just from her incredible illustrations but also stemmed from her compelling writing.  The character’s popularity was so large that it was published in over 100 newspapers and reprinted by Timely Comics to total over a million copies per issue. June Tarpe Mill's work on Miss Fury ran for more than a decade, with romantic entanglements, a Nazi nemesis, and even single motherhood explored within certain strips. Mills was constantly writing on topics ahead of its time in both character complexity and subject matter.

Health challenges later forced Mills to scale back her role, so much so that the comic strip massively decline and eventually lead to its cancellation in 1951. June Tarpe Mills was a pioneer in the field of comics she was able to create a space for herself and her characters in an industry that gave her very little.
