Schehrazade's Alphabet

Schehrazade's Alphabet is a book created by Hassan Musa, originally published in 1994, telling the story of the 28 sultanas that preceded Schehrazade. In the illustrations, such as the one on the front cover of the book, Musa uses Arabic letters as shapes that are integrated into the forms of the drawings of the women, demonstrating a unique and creative treatment of Arabic typography. The drawings being in black and white allow the shapes typography used in the illustrations to shine. There are also forms and motifs in the illustrations that are typically seen in Arabic calligraphy, such as the multi-stroke shape in what looks to be the hair, and the elements and composition of the text below the woman.
