Arabic Braille Religious Inclusion

849

Arabic Braille serves as the braille system for the Arabic language.  It was established in the 1950s as part of broader efforts to promote international braille unification. Although standard Arabic script is read from right to left, Arabic Braille follows the international convention of being read from left to right.

In 2019, Karachi, the capital of the Sindh province, was the site of the first printing of the Holy Quran in Braille for the visually impaired in Pakistan. Islam by Touch is one organization that produces and distributes braille Qurans with the mission of making Islam more accessible for the blind community. The Braille Quran design gives visually impaired Muslims the ability to engage with their faith independently. Graphic designers must mediate between tradition and technology in order to translate centuries-old sacred text into a tactile medium, without losing meaning or rhythm.
