Churchward Aoteraoa Purarangi Alphabet Poster

This is a poster for the Churchward Maori Light 83 typeface designed by Joseph Churchward. Joseph Churchward was a Samoan-born New Zealand graphic designer who developed several commercial fonts during his career. This poster features stylized characters of the Maori alphabet that pull on the symbols and lines used in tā moko (the traditional style of body and facial tattoos in the Maori culture). The poster also features the numbers 1 to 10, months of the year, days of the week, night and day in Maori and English.

The poster not only incorporates the artistic elements of Maori culture into the typeface, but it also acts as a way to document the language by including terminology.
