Counter-Hegemony Fist
"Counter-Hegemony Fist" is a zine made in 2012 by Lee Chunfung and Pong Yatming, and it is an example of how Hong Kong's underground publications have developed distinctive approaches to typography and visual design. Hong Kong zines weren't just imported from Western punk culture but they evolved from local needs to "channel suppressed messages" during periods of social and political tension (Lo, 2019). The design incorporates rough typography and DIY production techniques that stand in contrast to mainstream design aesthetics. The lettering translates to messages like "Equality, Justice, Conscience and Care" and "Mutual help in the community makes everyone stronger," which combines political urgency with solidarity. This work becomes pretty valuable for understanding subcultural design influence because of how it represents one of many Hong Kong zines that emerged during a period of increasing political awareness.
