The Pink Locker Society #1: Only Girls Allowed

The Pink Locker Society is a novel that follows a group of eight-grade girls who forms a secret society to answer their peer's questions about puberty and growing up. This book, Only Girls Allowed by Debora Moffitt is the first book of the series, aimed at teen girls experiencing the awkwardness of puberty. The book's cover and branding are intentionally saturated with the use of pink in different tones, which clearly shows its intended audience is girls. This heavy use of traditionally feminine colors plays into long-standing marketing strategies that visually separate products by gender. This book reinforces the idea that bodies and self-care are ideas directed towards girls rather than boys. The use of pink is not just decorative, rather, a strategic design that links gender identity to visuals, demonstrating how color palettes can aim children's content to a particular group.

During this time, boys were expected to gravitate towards blue, action, and science whereas girls would be more inclined to pink, nurture and friendship. Additionally, it was an association of girls with emotional aspects that were also reflected in books.
