The new wave movement was a less political evolution of the punk rock genre and took place mainly from the late 1970s into the early 1980s. It was a quirkier and melodic addition to its predecessor that took inspiration from the aesthetics and pop music of the ’50s and ’60s. Design wise, the new wave can be identified by its grid-defying juxtaposing elements such as multiple type weights, bold and provocative color/imagery, and inconsistent spacing.
Speaking in Tongues is the 5th studio album by Talking Heads. The artwork stands out but is very visually appealing as it uses complementary colors and references the CMYK printing process (cyan, magenta, yellow) in the framing photos. The type is not the main focus but is randomly spaced out.
