The new wave movement was a less political evolution of the punk rock genre and took place mainly from the late 1970s into the early 1980s. It was a quirkier and melodic addition to its predecessor that took inspiration from the aesthetics and pop music of the 50’s and 60’s. Design wise, new wave can be identified by its grid-defying juxtaposing elements such as multiple type weights, bold and provocative color/imagery, and inconsistent spacing.
“The Cars” is the debut album for the band The Cars. After the first design by drummer David Robinson was rejected, the label took over. The album cover features Russian journalist and model Nataliya Medvedeva, who stands out in contrast to the otherwise blue and gray aesthetic of the cover with pops of red. The art is otherwise minimalistic, using a blue sans serif font and only changing the type weight as emphasis.
