Modern album covers display how artists use specific typography and imagery to convey the meaning and emotion behind their music. By focusing on the placement, color, typeface, and visual style, it shows how graphic design can be used for storytelling, not just advertising.
Though it may not look like there is any typography on this album cover, there is a small “AM” hidden in the middle of the waveforms. This cover for Arctic Monkeys’ “AM” album uses only black and white, with a focal point on the waves. The negative space draws the attention of the waves which represent sound and the energy the songs give off. The lines are rounded, clean, and mostly symmetrical, which conveys the smooth feel of the songs and how they flow together. The lack of text and the black background allow the piece to feel mysterious, making the listener question the tone of the album and what each piece means to them.
