This design was created by Takenobu Igarashi in 1824 for a set of playing cards at MoMA. It appears to be just a black-and-white pattern, but closer inspection reveals the shapes of real playing cards, including spades, clubs, and what appear to be queens (Q) and jacks (J). Instead of just repeating the same pattern, the shapes are stretched, stacked, and rotated. This layout gives us the image of playing cards being unfolded in the hands.
