Nove Mystetstvo
Vasyl Yermilov, born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, was a painter and graphic designer. Leader of Ukrainian constructivism and a key figure in the avant-garde, Yermilov is the author of many works: posters, agit-trains (trains with special auxiliary cars used for propaganda purposes), street decorations, billboards, murals, packaging, and journal and book covers. His distinctive style of constructivist collage and typographic design developed distinctly and in parallel with Russian constructivism. This magazine cover, designed by Yermilov, features his unique typeface, which appears in several of his works. Made with a limited palette of ink and gouache, it is a very simple design. The text, translating to “New Art, 10 Years of October,” identifies it as issue 23 of a Ukrainian art magazine. Featuring industrial-inspired geometric shapes and an abstract and minimal composition, this cover shows Yermilov’s unique approach to constructivism, offering a distinctly Ukrainian perspective.
