Calendar Design
Volodymyr Yurchyshyn, famously known for his distinguished style of design and illustration, was a Ukrainian graphic artist and book designer. Throughout his lifetime, he designed numerous publications, including the works of the well-known Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. His unique style of combining Ukrainian engraving and folk art with modern motifs is present in his works, including this calendar design. Created in the 1980s, this work features Yurchyshyn’s own sans serif typefaces and applique techniques. It includes a lot of repeating elements, such as the month names, the years, the phrases and words, as well as the illustrations. As there are quite a few years present on the calendar and the context for the creation of this design is unknown, it is hard to presume what year or what reason this calendar was made for. However, context is not needed to appreciate Yurchyshyn's individual and deeply national style, inspired by Ukrainian folk art and historic calligraphy, a style which still influences artists today.
