A Cyberfeminist Manifesto for the 21st Century

VNS Matrix was one of the very first groups of artists to truly adopt the term Cyberfeminism. An artist collective founded in the early ‘90s in Adelaide, Australia, it was headed by creators Virginia Barratt, Francesca da Rimini, Julianne Pierce, and Josephine Starrs. This image is a postcard displaying their manifesto, written in 1991. The manifesto was intended for digital displays, to be seen on the internet, but it was also spread through more (at the time) traditional means such as television, radio, famously through billboards, and also using printed advertisements such as this image. The imagery used by VNS matrix in their manifesto would go on to influence the style of Cyberfeminist design, notably through the group’s use of collage imagery, patterning, and most importantly, the stretching and warping of text that conventional designers typically rejected.
