Once used for tracking genetics, the sex symbol has been utilized by a variety of social and political movements, acting as a shorthand for a multitude of identities. It is usually imbued with other elements that alter its meaning from a mere genetic tracker. For the gay rights movement, a version of the symbol repeated and intertwined became shorthand for homosexuality, as seen in Jary Jernegan’s Gay Rights are Human Rights.
