BAYARD Typeface
Seals, T. (2021). BAYARD Typeface [Digital Poster]
Tré Seals is a contemporary typographer who takes massive inspiration from the civil rights movement. When asked why he has chosen the sources of inspiration that he has used thus far— Tré responded that “Because I’m trying tackle the issue of diversity, I try to focus on movements that either relate to minorities of color, or everyone. An example of a movement that relates to minorities of color would be the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968.” (Seals in Peet, 2018) The iconic I AM A MAN posters (Figure 14) used in the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968 have been adapted into various works of art outside of just Tré Seals. The type-face honoring this style of text (Figure 13) has been made be Seals, along with various other styles of text from the civil rights era– allowing the feeling to the era to be reproduced in print and online for a new generation of designers.
