僕ビール、君ビール。 Boku Beer Kimi Beer is a beer collaboration between Yo-Ho Brewing Company and convenience store, Lawson, first released in 2014. This beer is known for its illustrated frog and playful packaging. This design was the initial package design when 僕ビール、君ビール。 was first released. It was designed by 丸山誠司 Satoshi Maruyama, an illustrator and children’s book author.
The can design has a white background, with black text and bright green and orange illustrations. The text denotes the name of the product, formatted in both tategaki (vertical writing) and yokogaki (horizontal writing). The combination of writing orientation along with its handwritten aspect creates a casual and fun atmosphere, branding the product as an approachable alcoholic beverage. This is furthered by Maruyama’s funky illustration of a frog wearing a hat standing on top of what looks like skyscrapers. The illustrations consist of simple angular linework and occasional curved lines for the frog and its hat. The ‘unpolished’ illustration shows its hand-drawn nature, giving rise to the design and making the product more personable and approachable.
It is important to note that the design was revamped in 2020, but playful design, illustrated frog and buildings remain core elements. Yo-Ho Brewing Company also released different versions of the beer, all with distinct designs, all made by Maruyama .
