This dynamic calligraphy by Suitou Nakatsuka 中塚翠涛 features the Chapter 1 title from Yakuza 0, one the titles of adventure game series from Sega. The image shows one of the examples, but other calligraphies in the game are also written by Suitou. Yakuza 0 captures a chaotic, powerful set against the backdrop of 1988 Japan's economic bubble era. The variation in stroke weight, brush's scratchy textures, and the ink splashes in each characters Suitou draws successfully fuses traditional Japanese calligraphy with the worldview of Yakuza series.
Suitou Nakatsuka is a calligraphy designer who expands the possibilities of Japanese characters (kanji 漢字) through diverse media, such as video, glass, and ceramics, while grounding her work in classic brush techniques. Her work is acclaimed both in Japan and abroad, and she continuously explores ways to give two-dimensional characters and line works three-dimensional depth and cinematic expression.
